DO NOT ENTER (R5-1) Signs – MUTCD 2023

The DO NOT ENTER (R5-1) sign is used to prohibit vehicles from entering a roadway, ramp, or lane in the wrong direction. Common applications include one-way streets, freeway exit ramps, divided highways, and other restricted-access locations.

Placement Requirements:

Install the sign where drivers could mistakenly enter a roadway in the wrong direction.
Mount on the right side of the roadway or ramp facing approaching traffic.
A second sign may be installed on the left side or median for added visibility.
Signs should be shielded or turned away from traffic to which they do not apply.

Best Practice: Use DO NOT ENTER signs in conjunction with WRONG WAY (R5-1a) signs on exit ramps and other locations where wrong-way entry is a concern.
