Speed Limit Sign Size and Sheeting Requirements

The appropriate Speed Limit sign size should be selected based on the roadway classification and traffic conditions:

18" x 24" – Use only on low-volume roads with speed limits of 35 MPH or less.
24" x 30" – Standard size for single-lane roads.
30" x 36" – Recommended for multi-lane roads or where enhanced conspicuity is desired.
36" x 48" – Use on expressways.
48" x 60" – Use on freeways.

Retroreflective Sheeting

Speed Limit signs should be fabricated using one of the following high-performance retroreflective sheeting materials:

High Intensity Prismatic (HIP) – Provides excellent nighttime visibility and meets current roadway sign performance requirements for most applications.
DG3 Diamond Grade Cubed (DG3) – Premium-grade sheeting that offers the highest level of reflectivity and visibility, particularly beneficial on higher-speed roadways, multi-lane facilities, expressways, and freeways.

Recommendation

For most roadway applications, High Intensity Prismatic (HIP) sheeting is an effective and economical choice. Where maximum visibility and driver recognition are desired—especially on higher-speed roadways—DG3 Diamond Grade Cubed sheeting is recommended.
